Causes Of Lymphedema
The network of organs, lymph nodes, ducts and vessels that produce and remove fluids from tissues is known as the lymph system. Lymphedema occurs when protein-rich lymph fluid accumulates in areas of the body because of a weak lymphatic system that cannot effectively transport the fluid. Most of the time lymphedema starts in a foot or hand and works it's way up the leg or arm, but it can also affect your face or torso. Lymphedema can be caused by lymphatic hypoplasia or by the blockage or the rupture of lymphatic vessels.
Another condition that affects the lymph system is known as lymphangitis which occurs when bacteria gains access to the lymphatic vessels. Usually lymphangitis is caused by a strep bacteria causing erysipelas but sometimes it can be also staph. This can cause the affected area to become red and hot. There may even be red streaks in the skin and as it progresses lymphadenopathy or swelling of the lymph glands. If the swelling becomes bad enough it can sometimes break the skin.
Lymphedema Treatments
Primary lymphedema is considered a genetic disease and not very common. It is treated surgically. Secondary lymphedema is much more common and is usually a result of a surgery, radiation or other conditions that have caused damage to the lymph vessels.
There are several strategies that can be used to drain lymphatic fluid which is also referred to as decongestant therapy. There are several different ways to manually get the fluids moving including drainage, compression garments or bandages, area specific exercises, massage or mechanically assisted exercise. Through proper management of lymphedema symptoms it's possible to maintain a relatively normal life despite the fact there isn't a definite cure for the problem.
When you first start dealing with lymphedema it's important to find out everything you can about the disease. What type of an exercise program should you follow? Is a relation technique or maybe even yoga something that you should pursue? It's important to ask your doctor. In addition, you should ask your doctor about nutritional considerations such as Vitamin C, Zinc and high quality Protein as each of these are thought to be beneficial. Once you learn the best ways to cope with and manage the symptoms of this disease, you will find that your frustrations will ease.
A compression bandage, garments or socks can be an effective aid in keeping swelling down when you are away from home or traveling. These are inexpensive items so experiment with a few to see what works best for you. As you learn what works for you, your life will return to a more normal state and you will find that your lymphedema symptoms will be much more manageable.
